WHERE IS ASHUR?

The ancient site of Ashur (Qual’at Sherqat) is located in the Salh Addin Providence of Iraq. The site is located 390 km from the modern city of Bagdad, on the western bank of the Tigris river. The archaeological area expands 70 ha (a hectare is 10,000 square acres). The site includes temples, three ziggurat, graves and public buildings within the city walls, and a further palace in the north-west. It was also calculated a buffer zone (100 ha) expanding 500 m from the western and southern boundaries of the site (Ashur archaeological site monitoring, 2010).
